In her high school advanced placement (AP) biology class, Tara Mittelberg learned about Norman Borlaug, the renowned scientist, humanitarian and Nobel Peace Prize winner who devoted his career to battling hunger and poverty across the globe. This sparked her interest in agriculture and prompted her to pursue the opportunity to be an Emerging Leader in the Land O’Lakes Global Food Challenge during the 2014–2015 academic year.

As I sit down to write this farewell blog, I feel overwhelmed with emotion because of the amazing experiences the Land O’Lakes Global Food Challenge has given us 10 Emerging Leaders. However, this blog isn’t meant to dwell on our farewell, but rather to highlight the learning experiences we encountered.

How to Apply - Submission Requirements

  • Meet Eligibility Requirements
  • Review and complete the application form
  • Submit a video (up to one minute) that includes, but not limited to:
  • Why Land O’Lakes should choose you to work on a team with other students from across the U.S. spending 12-weeks as part of a boots-on-the ground, mentor guided, project based food security and agriculture experiential learning opportunity that will help Land O’Lakes feed human progress.
  • What skills you have that make you a fit candidate and what you will bring to the internship that is unique to you
  • What you want to get out of the internship
  • Explain your interest in the food and Ag industry or why you have a desire to learn more about food, food insecurity, and agriculture

Selection Criteria

  • Ability to clearly communicate and explain why Land O’Lakes should choose you to work with other students from across the U.S. for 12-weeks finding solutions to food and agriculture challenges that will help Land O’Lakes feed human progress
  • Ability to clearly communicate the skills you have that make you a good candidate for the Global Food Challenge internship
  • Ability to articulate what you want to get out of the internship
  • Ability to articulate your interest in the food and Ag industry, desire to learn more, or drive discussion about modern agriculture and food security related issues

Note to applicants: If selected as an Emerging Leader, your submission video may be shared on the Global Food Challenge website.)


After submitting the application form and video, you will receive a confirmation with a link to complete step two, which requires you to complete a questionnaire from Human Resources and submit your resume. To be considered for the Global Food Challenge internship, both steps much be completed.



Application Timeline:

  • August 20, 2018 – Open for Applications for 2019 Global Food Challenge internship
  • October 10, 2018 – Application deadline. Application form closes at 12:00 p.m. (NOON) CST/1:00 p.m. EST
  • October 10-12, 2018 – Applicant submissions reviewed
  • October 15, 2018 – All applicants will be notified via email regarding applicant status. Finalists will receive an email asking to select their interview date and time preference.
  • October 17, 2018 – Interview times confirmed with finalists
  • October 24, 2018 – Finalist Interviews
  • October 25, 2018 – Offers extended to 2019 Global Food Challenge Emerging Leaders
